Pharmacy plays a vital role in healthcare management and yet many people take this profession for granted. We often see them as someone who stands behind counters to fill our medications. What many people are not aware of is that pharmacy roles have expanded, offering a range of services. They can help you with a variety of common conditions and minor health problems like aches, pains, cough, and colds. They also help in promoting health and well-being. Many pharmacies provide access to sexual health, smoking cessation, and alcohol support services.

As part of the healthcare team, it is important to have a trustworthy and smart pharmacist to work with. They provide you with the medicines you need including over-the-counter drugs and can help you out in case of any minor emergency.  They are trained experts in the use of medicines and any possible drug interaction.

We may have found ourselves having to deal with situations where our prescriptions did not get filled, leaving us in an urgent condition and completely helpless. We were not advised of any problems they might have run into. They simply set us aside, leaving us with no medications, vulnerable and troubled. These things happen but we should not generalize and lose our trust in pharmacies.

Good pharmacists will go beyond what is expected of them. They genuinely care about the patient’s health, take care of them, and put some effort to build a relationship with them. There are pharmacists who will listen to any questions a patient might have and thoughtfully reply with care and concern. They will keep patients up to date with the status of their medicines and will call when needed. They want to make sure that their patients are happy with their caretaking.

Having a good pharmacist is beneficial especially when you are sick. If you are on specific medications, some over-the-counter drugs may interact dangerously with the other medications you are taking. A pharmacist can help you pick a good alternative. They know all of your medicines; they can recommend remedies that they know will work and treat you with honesty and sympathy.

It feels great when you go to a pharmacy often enough that the people working there takes the time to know you well. They will fill prescriptions saying that they will get right on it in order to get the patients feel better. This may seem too much to ask but it is part of their job and it will be greatly appreciated.

Some people might not consider pharmacists in their healthcare team but pharmacists are extremely important and helpful. Knowing that you have someone that you can run to for help if needed can help put us at ease. They are equipped with knowledge that we do not have and can provide us with extra information that can be useful and beneficial to our health.

Talk to your pharmacist about your health. You will find that they are more than willing to help you find something you need. You will find that once you begin to build that relationship, you will feel more pleased going to your pharmacy and more connected to your healthcare providers.
